15 Month Check Up
* Let me just take a moment here & say I LOVE Dr. Amy. She is the laid back to my uptightness & it makes for a great doctor/patient relationship. She puts up with me calling at least once a week & always knows when to say "Don't worry" or "Come on in." Just saying.
I thought Grayson had 8 teeth, but Dr. Amy was able to see a molar coming in that Grayson would not let me see. Dr. Amy has a stick to put down your throat so Grayson was a little more compliant in letting her look in his mouth than he is with me. Grayson had 2 shots today & was a trooper. He cried for a few seconds and was totally over it after that. I feel for him though....I hate those things, too. Overall, it was a good visit. And the best news of all.....she said Grayson could keep his paci until he's 2! Since Micah never took one & I rebelled against the advice of the American Pedicatriac Association to take away pacis at 6 months, I wasn't sure how much longer would be reasonable. All I know is Grayson (i.e., mom) is not ready to lose it because he doesn't want to have to (i.e., mom doesn't want to listen to him) cry at bedtime. So, we will deal with that in about 9 months. Hmmm....I have just as much time to prepare to take the paci as I did to give birth to a child in the first place & I'm not sure which is going to be harder :)

Chicken Taco Soup
Tonight's dinner is Chicken Taco Soup in the crockpot. This is a super easy meal.....and it's yummy & yields plenty of leftovers. Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 onion, chopped
1 16 oz. can chili beans
1 15 oz. can black beans
1 15 oz. can whole kernel corn, drained
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
1 12 oz. can or bottle beer
2 10 oz. can diced tomatoes with green chiles, undrained (I substitute one can of Rotel Mexican diced tomatoes with lime juice & cilantro)
1 1.25 oz. package taco seasoning
3 whole skinless, boneless chicken breasts
shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
sour cream (optional)
crushed tortilla chips (optional)
Directions:
Place onion, chili beans, black beans, corn, tomato sauce, beer, and diced tomatoes in a slow cooker. Add taco seasoning & stir to blend. Lay chicken breasts on top of the mixture, pressing down slightly until just covered by the other ingredients. Set slow cooker for low heat, cover, and cook for 5 hours.
Remove chicken breasts from the soup, and allow to cool long enough to be handled. Shred chicken and stir back in to the soup. Continue cooking for 2 hours. Serve with desired toppings.
I often use frozen chicken breasts & cook this on high heat for 3-4 hours, then shred the chicken. Yummy!

I'll Show You
Diary of a 2nd Child
Grayson's idea of a good time is to pull every hair product out of my bathroom cabinet, make his way to the dog bowl and eat some dog food, splash in the dog's water bowl while he's at it, break a few of my coasters, pull keys off of our computer, then finish it off by coloring on the kitchen floor with a crayon that he found under the couch. Somewhere in there he may pull every DVD off of the bookshelf, put a couple of Micah's blocks in his mouth, rip up a couple of magazines, pull every book off his bookshelf, every blanket out of his drawer, try to ride the dog like a horse, and try to eat a marker (which result in a green face and green tongue by the way). I promise I watch my children, but this one is quick and I'm not used to having to be quite so vigilant. There is a website called www.shitmykidsruined.com. Grayson will make us famous eventually, I'm sure.
Most of these things have been easy to fix. All cabinets now have locks, the dog bowls are put away except when Grayson is asleep, the coasters are put away, the computer is up high, the crayons are put away (except when a stray one rolls under the couch unbeknownst to mom), the DVDs are on a higher shelf (as is everything else....there is nothing on the bottom 2 shelves of our bookcase), and Micah knows to put caps on markers. I don't really care if he pulls all his books down and gets all his blankets out. They are his. The dog....well, he'll just have to suck it up for a while longer. While all these things drive me crazy, they are also what I love about Grayson. They are what makes him different from his brother. He is fearless, an explorer. I wouldn't have him any other way.

Micah-isms of the Day
#2--Micah: (looking at creamed corn on his plate) I don't like that.
Me: Honey, it's just corn.
Micah: I don't like that corn. I only like corn with a stick.

First Haircut

The before picture (He's upset because I took a marker away from him. Notice the green marker stain around his mouth)

The after picture (no more bangs in the eyes and hair is no longer partying in the back)
And for his first haircut, he got an award.

Micah did not get such a nice keepsake for his first haircut since his stylist (i.e., Mom) did not think of something so cute and actually misplacd the locks of hair she cut.
Not to be outdone, Micah got a haircut as well.

The before picture (just to illustrate the sheer volume of hair this child has)

The after picture (don't you love the face)

Enough TV Already!

I put this together this afternoon. I'm going to take it to have it laminated later so it will be reusable. Each TV represents a 30 minute (or less) show. Each time Micah watches a TV show, he will cross off a TV with a dry erase marker. If he chooses to watch a movie, he will cross off 3 TVs. This way he can see how many shows he has left, & I am sort of putting it in his hands to decide when he wants to watch TV. Once all the TVs have been crossed off, the TV is off for the day. Sounds like a good plan in theory. I'll let you know how it works!

Simplicity
Micah: Mommy, are you tired?
Me: Yes sweetie.
Micah: Then just go to sleep.

Happy Birthday Grayson!
For his birthday, we kept things simple. We had one other couple over for dinner & a little "party." Had our family been closer, we probably would have done a family party, but they participated as we waited until his birthday to let Grayson open the gifts they had sent. He enjoyed opening presents but was not very happy to put one toy aside in order to open the next one. He especially enjoyed eating cupcakes!!! Thank you to all who made Grayson's first year the wonderful year it was. To Grayson, Micah may have made me a mother first but you made me a more blessed (and efficient) mother & made me realize just how much love I have in my heart. I thought it was full until you came along. I hope you always know how much we love you! Here's hoping year two is even better than the first!!

Hmmm....I'm not sure about this....
I think this is pretty good...
It's even better in my hair....
See....I told you!
Just wait to see what I can destroy with a baseball bat!
What are you doing to me?????
